#Add color and texture after throwing to enrich your work

REVIEWED BY [十泱](https://www.twosevenths.com/en/tag/%E5%8D%81%E6%B3%B1/)

The two instructors at Chiyao are very engaging, and their teaching style is humorous and fun, always filling the classroom with laughter.

The Taichung Pottery class begins with the instructor introducing the Japanese #31 porcelain clay used in the session. This clay has a very fine texture and fires to a pure white color. The instructor then explains how to operate the pottery wheel, preparing the clay blocks to help students get started quickly.

The trial class offers a high degree of freedom, with instruction tailored entirely to the student's desired creation. Because it's a one-on-one session, the instructor guided and supervised Shi Yang throughout the entire process, allowing her to successfully shape her ideal piece.

After the piece was formed, the instructor taught techniques for slip painting and carving textures, allowing students to add their preferred colors and patterns to their work. This resulted in a unique creation, making it arguably the most versatile Taichung Pottery experience available.

Baiyang Studio is a Taichung Pottery studio located in a residential area of Nantun, offering pottery classes for free-form hand-building and incense burner creation. All classes require advance booking and full payment via bank transfer.

For free-form hand-building, there are no restrictions on the type of pottery you can create; you can choose during the class. Each session typically allows for the completion of one piece. #Experience Taichung Pottery in a Stylish, Aesthetic Setting

REVIEWED BY [Kay](https://www.twosevenths.com/en/tag/Kay/)

Baiyang Studio's ceramics classroom feels like a space straight out of an interior design magazine, with a subtle, elegant fragrance and natural light illuminating the ceramic pieces.

The refined and comfortable atmosphere made Kay's experience at this Taichung Pottery studio feel relaxed and easy. The instructor's pacing was excellent, and the 2.5-hour pottery session flew by.

Kay chose the free-form sculpting experience, which offers a lot of flexibility, so even beginners don't need to worry about where to start. The instructor began by asking about everyone's DIY pottery experience. For those without a clear idea, they helped select a project from the finished pieces on display, ranging from cups and plates to vases.

Even with varying skill levels, the instructor clearly explained the techniques, breaking down basic pottery methods and guiding each student individually. Kay tried making a European-style ceramic plate and, with the instructor's appropriate assistance, completed the decorative carving from scratch. She is especially looking forward to seeing the finished piece after firing.

## Iwamibo 石見坊

PLATE 03–03

### 石見坊 About the Venue

Introduction

Iwamibo is located in the Tunghai commercial district. Its simple, rustic entrance is flanked by naturally air-dried pottery, and inside, the venue features a warm wood aesthetic filled with various ceramic artworks, exuding a handcrafted artistic ambiance.

The first floor is divided into two spaces: one area is where the venue glazes and fires its ceramics, and the other is primarily for in-house instruction. Though not large, this area is equipped with three pottery wheels for throwing.

Taichung Pottery classes average one instructor for every 1-3 students, and a single student is enough to start a class. In addition to wheel throwing, they also offer hand-building, ceramic doll creation, slab making, and ongoing regular courses.

All classes require booking a time slot via Instagram. A reservation is only confirmed after full payment and verification with the venue.

#Taichung Pottery: Fun for All Ages

REVIEWED BY [安雅](https://www.twosevenths.com/en/tag/%E5%AE%89%E9%9B%85/)

For this Taichung Pottery experience, Anya tried a single hand-throwing class. Before starting, the instructor asked what she wanted to make—a bowl, plate, or cup—then provided an apron. Long hair needed to be tied back to avoid getting dirty during the session.

The instructor first demonstrated the complete hand-throwing process: centering, opening, pulling up, and shaping. While it looked simple, each step actually required patience and a steady hand, along with finding a rhythm between the hands and the pottery wheel.

Anya initially struggled to get the feel for it, feeling a bit frustrated. However, the instructor was incredibly kind and patiently guided her on posture, constantly checking on her progress. If Anya didn't understand something, the instructor would guide her hand-to-hand through the step again.

What Anya loved most was how the instructor encouraged students to bravely experiment and connect with the clay, assuring them it was okay to make mistakes. This put Anya, who considers herself clumsy, completely at ease, and she was incredibly moved to successfully complete her piece.

#Rustic Taichung Pottery Studios

REVIEWED BY [十泱](https://www.twosevenths.com/en/tag/%E5%8D%81%E6%B3%B1/)

In the Taichung Pottery class, the first half-hour is dedicated to the instructor explaining key points and techniques for hand-building with clay, followed by practice exercises. This ensures that even complete beginners can grasp the fundamentals.

Next, the instructor goes around, asking each student what they'd like to create and offering personalized advice. Some students made mugs, vases, incense holders, and jewelry boxes, while Shiyang crafted a ceramic doll.

Because this Taichung Pottery venue offers such a diverse range of choices, with a high degree of freedom and varying skill requirements, the instructor provides one-on-one guidance tailored to each student's chosen project.

Shiyang found the instructor to be incredibly kind and patient. Even when Shiyang fell behind, there was no pressure to rush, and the instructor diligently helped Shiyang successfully complete the piece.

Finally, the instructor presents samples for reference, giving direction to those without a clear idea. Students then select their glaze color and texture, and the instructor applies the glaze. This makes it an ideal Taichung hand-building studio for beginners.

#Mastering wheel-throwing and hand-building in one go

REVIEWED BY [Kay](https://www.twosevenths.com/en/tag/Kay/)

Even with a reservation, Kay only discovered upon arriving at this Taichung Pottery studio that both wheel-throwing and hand-building could be experienced simultaneously. Naturally, she decided not to miss the opportunity.

For wheel-throwing, the instructor first centers the clay, though a student next to her, who was practicing from scratch, went through three lumps of clay. The instructor was kind and helpful, trimming and shaping the pieces as needed, allowing everyone ample practice without excessive intervention. They also reminded students that wheel-throwing requires accumulated experience, so there's no need to force every piece into a finished product for firing.

Hand-building takes less time to create. Kay communicated with the instructor beforehand that she only wanted to make functional vessels. The instructor helped her choose designs, paying attention to practicality and reminding her of material limitations, before finally selecting glazes.

Kay completed one piece in each of the two classes, finishing even earlier than the original booking. This studio is highly recommended for anyone looking to experience both pottery joys in one visit.

#Affordable Taichung Pottery with Photo Souvenirs

REVIEWED BY [十泱](https://www.twosevenths.com/en/tag/%E5%8D%81%E6%B3%B1/)

Huashan Kiln's instructor teaches with humor and flair, making the process and explanations exceptionally clear and smooth. Shiyang deeply felt the instructor's passion for Taichung Pottery.

During the wheel-throwing process, assistant instructors provide help as needed. However, if you have a clear vision and prefer a hands-on approach, it's a good idea to communicate that to the assistants to ensure you fully enjoy the DIY experience.

The instructor moves around the room, taking photos of students fully absorbed in their work, and shares these pictures after class—a truly thoughtful service.

Once your piece is complete, you can choose to have your favorite fired, and the finished product will emerge with beautiful gradient colors. While you can't choose the exact colors for firing yourself—the instructor handles the color scheme—they are very approachable. Students with specific ideas can certainly share their preferred color palettes.

With the help of assistant instructors, Shiyang found this a perfect Taichung Pottery experience for first-timers.
