## About double8

About double8

double8, a Taipei rock climbing venue, is located in the historic Dihua Street area of Dadaocheng, an 8-minute walk from MRT Daqiaotou Station Exit 1. You can also take the bus to Taipei Bridge or Baoan Street Intersection and walk 4 minutes. If driving, you can park at the Daqiaotou Bridge parking lot or Cihsheng Temple parking lot. For Ubike, park at Yanping-Liangzhou Street Intersection or Minquan-Dihua Street Intersection. There are also scooter parking spaces right outside the venue, making it easily accessible by all modes of transport.

### ✦Climbing Gym Environment

double8 began as an outdoor gear design brand, and as you approach the venue in Dihua Street, the entire block is lined with old buildings, making it impossible to imagine that a climbing gym is hidden inside. Yuna also discovered a clever design detail at double8: the logo and the venue's name, "岩究所" (Yán Jiù Suǒ), are a playful homophone for "研究所" (Yán Jiù Suǒ, "research institute") and incorporate the double figure-eight knot, the most widely used knot in climbing.

This Dihua Street climbing gym has two floors: the reception area is on the first floor, and the climbing space is on the second. On the first floor, you'll find a display area for double8's climbing gear, along with open shoe racks to the right. A unique feature is the whey protein vending machine in front of the changing rooms, making it easy to refuel with protein after your climb.

Stepping onto the second floor of double8, the high-ceilinged atrium allows the climbing wall to extend upwards. The coach explained that because the old building's structure couldn't be altered, the climbing walls were built to conform to the existing house, resulting in a wall height of 8 meters, which is ideal for beginners.

Unlike other [Taipei climbing venues](https://www.twosevenths.com/en/indoors/rockclimbing-taipei-fun/) that focus on technical climbing with overhangs to increase difficulty, double8 primarily features flat walls with large holds. Yuna believes this design makes the walls perfectly suited for beginners with no prior experience.

## double8 Experience Review

double8 Experience Review

Yuna and her friends signed up for a one-hour introductory class at double8. The coach led them through warm-ups, demonstrated how to wear the harness, and carefully explained climbing safety and basic rope-handling techniques. The coach also specifically warned everyone not to touch any metal objects during the experience, including the quickdraws on the wall, the carabiners on the harness, and the belay device. If anyone needed assistance, they were instructed to ask the coach, who would help operate the equipment.

### ✦Coaching throughout

After the explanation, participants pair up to begin climbing and belaying, with coaches providing careful guidance to both climbers and belayers. Once a climber reaches the top, the coach assists the belayer below in lowering the rope, allowing the climber to rappel down the wall. The double8 climbing experience fee includes climbing shoes and harnesses, so there's no need to rent additional equipment.

This time, Yuna brought two friends to double8: one with absolutely no rock climbing experience, and one with almost exclusively bouldering experience. The instructor specifically pointed out that the biggest difference between top-roping and bouldering is that bouldering doesn't require rope belaying, and the climbing height is much lower.

Inexperienced climbers often tend to rely solely on arm strength, but rock climbing is actually a full-body workout. Relying only on your arms will quickly exhaust them, so it's important to make good use of footholds and leg strength to aid your climb.

Yuna found that for beginners, just overcoming the fear of heights during a climb is enough to break into a cold sweat, often leading to frantic grabbing at holds. To counter this, coaches use a laser pointer to guide hand and foot placements and offer encouragement, helping everyone reach the top.

Throughout your double8 experience, the coaches constantly remind you of key safety points. Once a climber reaches the top, they also help the belayer lower the rope, ensuring a safe descent.

It's important to remember that during the descent, climbers should let go of the handholds and rope. Keep your feet perpendicular to the wall and push off to avoid injury while rappelling.

### ✦Climbing for Love

Beyond the careful instruction, a visit to double8 also means trying Taiwan's most famous climbing route: the "Marriage Line." This route, made of red holds and a red rope, is certified by the matchmaking god Yue Lao of the globally renowned Xiahai City God Temple in Dadaocheng as a path to finding love.

Before you start climbing, remember to get a small card from your instructor, fill in your details, and then begin your ascent. Once you reach the top of the "Love Line," you can hang your own card on the Love Tree and even take a contact card from someone you feel a connection with.

According to the coaches at double8, someone who met their partner on the "love line" recently returned to double8 to propose, which was incredibly touching! Japanese visitors even make special trips to climb the legendary love line. The power of this particular love line at the Dadaocheng climbing venue should not be underestimated, so if you're single, come give it a try.

The coach also let us in on a little secret: this route cleverly uses the natural light from the old building's original atrium. So when you reach the top of the "Love Line," don't forget to turn around and take in the beautiful Dihua Street rooftops!
