To maintain teaching quality, classes are small, with a maximum of 4 students per session. The curriculum covers practical topics like using a pulse oximeter to measure blood oxygen during breath-holding, buddy rescue drills, and equalization techniques.

Dina was quite nervous at the start of the in-water sessions, but the attentive Bear Freediving instructor observed each student's unique traits and adjusted the teaching accordingly. Some classmates were experienced island dive assistants, while others were preparing for AIDA3 certification. The instructor provided personalized guidance, using breath-holding exercises and observing student reactions to determine the most suitable training methods for each individual.

The instructor employs diverse methods, allowing students to practice extending their breath-hold time in various states—some thrive in quiet concentration, while others benefit from distraction. Introduction

Yiqian offers customized Taichung Freediving courses with flexible scheduling to meet individual needs, led by head coach Alan and a team of professional instructors. They provide a choice of several freediving certification systems: 
*   PADI
*   AIDA
*   Molchanovs

The curriculum is divided into three main stages: academic, confined water, and open water. Academic sessions, lasting about 2 to 3 hours, are typically held at cafés near Divecube. Confined water training consists of two sessions completed directly in the Divecube pool.

For open water training, there are three sessions, which students can complete at Divecube in Taichung, the Northeast Coast, or Xiaoliuqiu. Notably, if you choose the PADI system, the open water portion will have one fewer session.

Coach Alan originally only taught scuba diving and kayaking; his foray into Taichung Freediving was purely out of his love for diving. He never expected that after deeper interactions with students, he would dive headfirst into the world of Taichung Freediving.

James, who learned the PADI system, first practiced AIDA breathing techniques with Head Coach Alan and discovered the profound depth of freediving breathing.

Typically, in the first pool session, Alan spends over 30 minutes teaching proper relaxation and breathing, letting students experience diaphragm contractions on dry land. He then meticulously breaks down the duck dive, step by step, which impressed James, showing him that every coach has unique skills.

Heyhey Dive's Instagram presence is very appealing, and their website provides clear information, which immediately made James want to sign up! Classes are offered almost every week in Taipei and Taichung, so you don't have to worry about availability, and you can join practice sessions just by letting the coach know.

While Heyhey Dive's fees don't cover all admission tickets, they are quite affordable for AIDA Taichung Freediving courses. Plus, they have a very comprehensive post-course group practice system: you only pay for venue admission, and you can retake certification exams for free within one year.

The best part is that even if you take the course alone, you don't have to worry about not having a dive buddy. You can meet many diving enthusiasts during group practices or dive trips.

There are currently 10 coaches, and they are all quite attractive, which made James wonder if this venue requires good looks in addition to certifications for their coaches.

Yi Qi Qian Shui's freediving instructors recommend Qiang Ge, who is very thorough in teaching freediving breathing techniques. Since ear equalization is the most challenging aspect of freediving, Qiang Ge meticulously covers both the Valsalva and Frenzel maneuvers, explaining all the textbook principles without missing a single detail.

If you frequently travel across Taiwan, you can also opt to take different courses at their various branch venues.

James suggests spending a few extra days practicing with an instructor in the 5-meter pool before heading to open water for certification. This is because freediving requires consistent ear equalization practice, and if you don't reach a 10-meter depth during open water training, you'll need to pay for a second certification attempt.

Hai Xi Diving is hands down the best value Taichung Freediving venue. The fees are comparable to other venues, but they include Divecube admission and a free ocean practical session.

Based on James's previous experience getting certified in Xiaoliuqiu, it's impossible to truly enjoy watching fish while you're focused on the certification process. That's why I believe you can only truly immerse yourself in the ocean after you've earned your license and can simply enjoy the experience.

After certification, they offer weekly pool practice sessions to ensure students continue to hone their skills. And because they mostly maintain a 1:2 instructor-to-student ratio, Hai Xi Diving is ideal for working professionals with irregular schedules, as you can arrange sessions with your instructor at your convenience, offering a truly customized feel.

If you need to make up a class, students only pay for pool admission, and Hai Xi will lend you equipment for free until you get certified. On a side note, the first time James saw the long-haired instructor Xiao Yang, he thought she was a Hong Kong movie star (laughs).
