About Hai Xiang Hua Dao SUP

Calista visited Hai Xiang Hua Dao SUP in Xiaoliuqiu, and at first, the venue's name made her chuckle. She initially thought it was a playful pun on "still want to slip and fall" (還想滑倒), imagining that falling into the water while paddleboarding could indeed be an addictive thrill. However, the owner later explained that the name's true meaning is a wish for all guests experiencing Xiaoliuqiu SUP to "enjoy their time on this island while paddling on the sea," taking in the beautiful coastal scenery and basking in Xiaoliuqiu's warm sunshine. As a local, the owner's deep love for his hometown is truly evident!

Venue Environment

Hai Xiang Hua Dao SUP is located near the Liuqiu Health Center, and a SUP board hanging high next to the venue's sign is quite eye-catching. On the day we visited, our group of thirteen arrived on nearly ten scooters, and there was still plenty of parking space — the area is quite expansive. The venue provides shower facilities, so even if you happen to slip on the water as the name suggests, you'll have a place to rinse off and change afterward. Additionally, Hai Xiang Hua Dao SUP offers lockers for guests to store their belongings temporarily.

Calista had tried other SUP activities before, and in terms of meticulousness, Hai Xiang Hua Dao SUP truly deserves high marks! For most SUP beginners, hearing "forward stroke" and "reverse stroke" makes it hard to react instantly or judge direction right away. But the Hai Xiang Hua Dao SUP coach clearly explained the paddle's principles and directional control during the lesson, complete with clear markings. This gave Calista a solid understanding of where the board would go, making it much faster to get the hang of it once out on the water.

Pre-SUP Instruction

Understanding SUP equipment is a crucial part of the lesson. The instructor starts by introducing the board: you need to stand with your feet parallel and centered for balance; if your feet are together or off-center, you risk falling in. Next, they cover the paddle, the most important part of stand-up paddling. First, adjust the length to your height. The paddle also has a front and back, but thankfully, Hai Xiang Hua Dao SUP's paddles are clearly marked, so you won't forget in the heat of the moment. Finally, the instructor explains paddling directions, divided into forward and reverse strokes. Different strokes allow you to move forward, backward, or turn in circles. It's essential to remember these, or you'll be lost at sea when trying to get that perfect photo.
