To get to Xiaoliuqiu, you'll need to take a ferry from Donggang.

To get to Xiaoliuqiu, you'll need to take a ferry from Donggang.

Xiao Liuqiu is an island off the coast of Donggang in Pingtung, Taiwan, with no connecting bridges. The primary way to get there is to first arrive at Kaohsiung Zuoying HSR Station, then take a bus or taxi to Donggang (driving to Donggang is also an option), and finally board a passenger ferry from Donggang to Xiao Liuqiu, a journey of approximately 30 minutes.

Step One: Arrive at Kaohsiung's Xinzuoying Station

We recommend taking the High-Speed Rail (HSR) to Xinzuoying Station. The fastest journey from Taipei to Kaohsiung is 94 minutes; from Taichung to Kaohsiung, 42 minutes; and from Tainan to Kaohsiung, 15 minutes.

If you're driving, you can disregard these directions.

Step Two: Head to Donggang, Pingtung

Driving

  • From Northern Taiwan: Take National Highway 1, then transfer to Provincial Highway 88 and National Highway 3. Exit at Linbian Interchange, then take Provincial Highway 17 directly to Donggang.
  • From Central or Southern Taiwan: Take Provincial Highway 17 or National Highway 3 directly. After exiting the interchange, proceed to Donggang.
  • Parking: There are many private parking lots around Donggang Pier, costing approximately NT$100–200 per day. Some offer shuttle services to the pier.

High-Speed Rail / Taiwan Railways + Shuttle

  • Take the High-Speed Rail or Taiwan Railways to Xinzuoying Station.
  • Transfer to the Kenting Express Bus or a shared taxi. The journey to Donggang takes approximately 70 minutes.

Step 3: Take a boat to Xiaoliuqiu

Ferries operate daily between Donggang and Xiaoliuqiu, with two main types: public ferries and private express boats.

Public Ferries:

  • Journey time: Approximately 30 minutes
  • Fare: NT$200 one-way, NT$380 round-trip for adults
  • Schedule: Fixed daily departure times, fewer services, slower speed

Private Express Boats:

  • Journey time: Approximately 30 minutes
  • Fare: Around NT$250 one-way, NT$450 round-trip (varies by ferry company)
  • Schedule: Rolling departures daily from 07:00 to 17:30, with services every 15–30 minutes during peak season, offering greater flexibility

Three-Day, Two-Night Xiaoliuqiu Trip|Transportation Tips

Three-Day, Two-Night Xiaoliuqiu Trip|Transportation Tips

Xiaoliuqiu is one of Taiwan's smallest outlying islands. With inconvenient public buses and no taxis, most visitors choose to get around by renting a scooter, electric scooter, or bicycle. Scooters are the most convenient option, and here's why we recommend them:

  • The entire island loop takes only 20 minutes, so a car isn't really necessary.
  • Attractions are spread out, and scooters offer high mobility and the easiest parking.
  • Rental fees are affordable, ranging from NT$300-500 per day depending on the model.
  • The island has many slopes, and scooters provide ample power, saving time and effort compared to cycling or walking.
  • Many venues are located right by the pier, so you can pick up your scooter as soon as you disembark.
