Founded in 1996, the Yilan International Children's Play Festival is an important family event held every summer at the Dongshan River Water Park, and is one of the representative summer activities. With exhibitions, performances, games, and exchanges as its four main axes, it is the only large-scale international festival in the country that focuses on "children" and "children's play", and it is also Asia's first children's-themed folk arts festival to be certified by the International Council of Folklore Festivals and Folklore Art Festivals (CIOFF®), which is a partner organization of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The theme of the 2025 Yilan Children's Play Festival is "Children's Heart Unlimited, Children's Play 30", symbolizing that the festival is not only a celebration, but also a paradise that spans across ages, generations, and cultures to create children's hearts unlimited.
